What is Gastric Banding Surgery?

Gastric banding surgery also commonly referred as lapband, is a “is an inflatable silicone device that is placed around the top portion of the stomach, via laparoscopic surgery, in order to treat obesity.” This procedure makes the upper stomach into a small pouch and helps the patient eat less and feel fuller longer.

The lapband helps patients that have tried dieting, exercising and have not seen results from it. This procedure is less invasive and it has a faster recovery rather than the other weight loss surgeries. Most lapbands are done via laparoscopic, leaving small incisions that will become barely visible. The lapband comes with a port that is implanted right under the first few layers of skin of the abdomen. This port is where the adjustments are made to the lapband. Saline is injected into the port with a small needle. Right after this adjustment patient will notice the difference of their eating habit, since after adjustment patient is back onto a liquid diet for a day to make sure that lapband is not too tight. If that were the case patient has to go back to their bariatric doctor to remove some saline from band. There is no need for another operation after this, since everything is done through the port.
